Upgrading Plesk is a fairly straight forward process and takes about 20 minutes. Note that this only upgrades the Parallels Plesk Panel and not server components such as Apache, PHP, or MySQL. If you are looking for help on upgrading these please see the other how to articles.

For this example, we are going to upgrade Plesk 8.3.0 to 9.2.0. Note however this process should work with any version.

Steps to upgrade Plesk:

1. Login to your Parallels Plesk Panel with your account admin username and password. This panel is usually located at https://www.domain.com:8443. If it is not, please contact your hosting provider to get details on how to access the panel.

2. Once logged in click on Server and then click on Upgrade.

3. Click on the upgrade you wish to install. For this example we will use Plesk 9.2.0.

4. Review what will be install and then click Install Components.

5. Next, enter the email address you want Plesk to email the status of the install to. This part is verify important. If something goes wrong the logs you get from the emails will help you to determine the issue and fix it.

6. Reboot the server after the install has completed. You will get an email when it is done. This part is also very important. This assures Plesk can ready the license which allows you to use the panel.

Well, that is it. Now you can login to the updated Parallels Plesk Panel. Depended on the version you upgrade to, it will most likely look a lot different. Not to worry though, most the options are the same so navigating the panel is still pretty easy.

Words of caution!

There are post out there that indicate upgrading from 8.3 to 9.0 breaks DNS and the Firewall. Do your homework before preforming any upgrades and always make sure you have valid backups!
