It is important to protect your wireless networks from unwanted and abusive users. Unauthorized users may reduce the bandwidth and may lock up your network. In addition, people such as wardrivers, might use your network and exploit your identity to perform illegal and unethical activity.

Here are a couple of simple and effective tips on how to protect wireless networks.

One is to change the default user and password after you have configured your router. If you leave it as it is, people around the area might access the network without your permission. Worse, they might change your network settings. Usually, the default values for the username and password of a router are "admin" and "password". Make sure you change them both as soon as you set up the router.

Another option is to turn off the notification of your presence within the wireless area. Just like turning off your bluetooth device, you can turn off the SSID or the Service Set Identifier to make you invisible from any scheming hackers. However, the downside is that there are some computers and wireless LAN cards that may have problems connecting a SSID network. Make sure that all devices and computers are compatible with your network setting before applying this step.

You can also use WEP or WPA encryption. WEP stands for Wireless Equivalent Privacy while WPA is short for Wireless Protected Access. Encryption ensures that your network is protected. WPA is a safe choice as it is easier to set up and much more secure compared to other encryption methods.

Another is to use MAC address filtering. This will allow network access from trusted devices based on their MAC (Machine Access Code) address. Setting up MAC filtering is complicated, costly, and should only be set up by people who have sound experience setting up routers.

You may also install a VPN or a Virtual Private Network to protect private information. VPN provides strong protection against unauthorized data access. The downside is that it may be complicated for people who have little experience when it comes to setting up routers.

It is important that you analyze how secured your data is if you want to ensure protection and privacy. As soon as possible, prevent unauthorized access on your network with the following tips mentioned to protect your privacy and household from any threats. People can always exploit your wireless networks without the necessary protective steps above so be careful!
